Triku vs TrainingPeaks.

Most triathlon coaches run their athletes through TrainingPeaks, and its fitness and fatigue charts are the reference. It doesn’t build your plan, though. You buy one in its store or get one from a coach, put it on your calendar and move sessions yourself, which needs Premium. Triku builds the plan from your answers and changes it when your week does.

TrainingPeaks or Triku

The short
answer.

If you only have a minute, this is how we’d decide. We make Triku, so weigh our view accordingly. TrainingPeaks is the standard for good reasons, and we say which below.

Pick TrainingPeaks if…

  • You have a coach, or want one. Most triathlon coaches already work in TrainingPeaks, and its Coach Match packages start at $149 a month.
  • You want the Performance Management Chart: fitness, fatigue and form from a training stress score for every sport.
  • Structured workouts on your devices matter. Garmin, Apple Watch, Wahoo, COROS, Polar, Suunto and Zwift all receive them.
  • You’d rather choose from thousands of plans by different coaches and manage your own calendar.

Pick Triku if…

  • You don’t have a coach and want a plan built around your swim level, your free days and your race date.
  • You want the plan to move when your week does, with every change explained and easy to undo.
  • It’s your first season. Technique-first swimming, brick guides, race-week prep and lessons are part of the app.
  • You’d like the app in Dutch.

The difference

Where Triku
wins.

TrainingPeaks gives you the tools to follow a plan. Triku gives you the plan itself, and keeps it in step with your week.

What Triku gives you

  1. Built for you, not bought.

Your experience in each sport, your swim level, the days you can train and your race date shape the weeks. If the date looks too tight, Triku tells you before you start.

  2. It moves with your week.

Busy Wednesday, a cold, a work trip: tell Coach and approve what it proposes. A TrainingPeaks store plan stays where it is until you drag it, and dragging needs Premium.

  3. Made for a first season.

Technique-first swimming with illustrated drills, brick guides, race-week kit lists and pacing, and Academy lessons that explain why a session is there.

  4. Your data stays in Europe.

Your account and training data are stored in the European Union, and they’re never sold or used for advertising.

With TrainingPeaks, you’d still need…

  1. A plan, or a coach.

TrainingPeaks doesn’t build one. The 40 best-selling triathlon plans cost $9.95 to $159, and Coach Match starts at $149 a month.

  2. Premium to move a session.

On the free Basic account you can’t reschedule workouts. Premium costs $19.95 a month.

  3. Time to fix missed weeks.

Store plans stay on their dates, so after a missed block you move the sessions yourself.

  4. An app in Dutch.

TrainingPeaks has no Dutch interface. Triku is available in English and Dutch.

Three situations

Who should
pick what.

Three situations, and what we’d tell a friend in each.

You have a coach, or you want one, and they’ll write your sessions.

TrainingPeaks

Your first half-distance race, no coach, and your weeks never look like the plan you bought.

Triku

You’re coming back after a few years away and want a plan that starts from where you are now.

Questions

Asked
a lot.

Do TrainingPeaks plans adjust when I miss workouts?

Not by themselves. A store plan sits on fixed dates in your calendar. With Premium you can move workouts by hand; with a free Basic account you can’t reschedule them. A coach can change your plan for you.

Is TrainingPeaks free?

There’s a free Basic account for logging workouts and following a plan or coach. Planning ahead, moving workouts and the Performance Management Chart need Premium: $19.95 a month or $134.99 a year on the website, or €22.99 a month in the Belgian App Store.

Is TrainingPeaks available in Dutch?

The app and website aren’t. The plan store does sell plans written in Dutch. Triku is available in English and Dutch.

Can I use Triku with a Garmin watch?

Yes, through your phone. Turn on Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android) in Garmin Connect, and the workouts you record reach Triku. Triku can’t send workouts to a Garmin yet; a direct Garmin Connect integration is planned.
