Triku vs Runna.

Runna is one of the best running apps you can get, and it now sells plans for sprint to full-distance triathlons. Read its help centre, though, and those plans cover the running only. Triku plans the swim and the bike as well. Here is the rest of the comparison, prices included.

Runna or Triku

The short
answer.

If you only have a minute, this is how we’d decide. We make Triku, so weigh our view accordingly. We’ve tried to be fair to Runna, which is a very good app.

Pick Runna if…

  • Your next goal is a running race, anywhere from 5K to 50K, and there’s no triathlon on the calendar.
  • You want structured runs on your wrist. Runna sends them to Garmin, COROS and Suunto watches and has its own Apple Watch app.
  • You’d like strength, yoga or Pilates sessions next to your running.
  • You already pay for Strava. The Strava + Runna bundle costs €149.99 a year.

Pick Triku if…

  • You’ve entered a triathlon, or you’re about to, and want the swim and the bike planned too.
  • Front crawl is new or shaky. Triku’s swim block can start with breathing and body position.
  • Your weeks rarely go to plan. You tell Coach what changed, see what it proposes and approve it.
  • You want bricks, race-week prep, food logging and routes in the same app as your plan.

The difference

Where Triku
wins.

Runna is built for running. Triku is built for all three sports of a triathlon, and for the weeks that don’t go to plan.

What Triku gives you

  1. One plan for three sports.

Swim, bike and run are planned as one week, not three schedules fighting over the same evenings. A brick in Triku includes the ride, not only the run after it.

  2. Swimming from zero.

If front crawl is new, your swim block can start with breathing and body position, with illustrated drills. Later a swim test sets your paces, and a map shows open-water spots with safety reminders.

  3. Changes you can read.

Busy Wednesday, a cold, a work trip: tell Coach by text or voice memo. You see what would move and why, nothing changes until you accept, and you can undo it.

  4. The things around the plan.

Race-week kit lists, pacing, taper and transitions. Food logging by photo, voice or text. Quieter running and cycling loops, with GPX export.

With Runna, you’d still need…

  1. A swim plan.

Runna doesn’t schedule swim sessions. You can log a swim by hand, and it doesn’t count toward your plan.

  2. A bike plan.

No Runna plan includes bike sessions, its triathlon plans included.

  3. The ride in your bricks.

Runna’s triathlon plans add short runs off the bike, but the ride before them isn’t planned.

  4. A place for your food.

Runna has no food log. Triku logs your meals by photo, voice or text.

Three situations

Who should
pick what.

Three situations, and what we’d tell a friend in each.

Your spring goal is a half marathon. A triathlon is a “maybe, one day”.

Runna

You’ve entered your first sprint triathlon and can’t swim 400 metres of front crawl yet.

Triku

You’re training for a half-distance triathlon and record everything on a Garmin. Turn on Apple Health or Health Connect sharing in Garmin Connect and your sessions reach Triku.

Questions

Asked
a lot.

Can Runna train me for a triathlon?

For the running, yes. Runna has sprint, Olympic, half and full-distance triathlon plans, but its help centre says they don’t include swimming or cycling sessions. You’d plan the swim and the bike yourself, or in another app.

Can I use Triku with a Garmin watch?

Yes, through your phone. Turn on Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android) in Garmin Connect, and the workouts you record reach Triku. Triku can’t send workouts to a Garmin yet; a direct Garmin Connect integration is planned.

How much does Triku cost compared with Runna?

We haven’t announced Triku’s price yet. It will be on this page and in the app stores before launch. Runna costs €19.99 a month or €119.99 a year in Belgium.

Can I use Runna and Triku at the same time?

You can, but let one of them plan your running. Two plans means two long runs and two interval sessions in the same week, which is more than either plan intends.
